B. A MASS COMMUNICATION UNDERGRADUATE PROGRA
PHILOSOPHY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Mass Communication programme is primarily predicated on the provision of quality education in the areas of Radio, Television, Film, Public Relations, Advertising, New media and Print productions. Aside from these, it will employ knowledge drawn from various segments of society in the proper foregrounding of the issues above. In this regard, the sociology of the media and its intricate relationship to societal development would be very pivotal to the study of this discipline at the University of Benin. The essential thread for appreciating this relationship is in the media offerings that are provided by the various media for society.
Therefore, a concerted effort would be made to ensure that from training, the quality expected of our products (students), their output would be commensurate to industry standard.
OBJECTIVES
a. To produce high quality graduates in Mass Communication to serve our society.
b. To produce adequate manpower in the area of Radio and Television, Film, Public Relations, New media, Advertising, Newspaper and Magazines.
c. To inculcate into graduates, the ethics of the profession respect for truth and fairness doctrine.
d. To enhance communication for development in the state and at the national level.
e. To promote cooperation and understanding in the society.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
UNIVERSITY MATRICULATION EXAMINATION (UME)
Candidates for admission into the four-year degree programme in Mass Communication Department should possess five credits at the ordinary level, which must include credit in English, Mathematics and Literature in English and any two subjects such as Government, Economics, Christian Religious Knowledge, Commerce, Agricultural Science, etc. They must sit and pass the Joint Matriculation Examination Board (JAMB) in addition to other screening requirements set by the Senate of the University.
DIRECT ADMISSION
In addition to the UME requirements, candidates for Direct Entry Admission shall possess five credit passes in the WAEC in not more than one sitting including English and Mathematics as well as Literature in English. Furthermore, the candidate must have obtained a Distinction or Upper credit level Diploma in Mass Communication from an institution recognized by the senate of the University of Benin.
COURSE REGISTRATION
All students admitted for the degree in Mass Communication must take and pass the prescribed electives, such as Introduction to Political Science, Sociology and Psychology before graduation. These are compulsory electives that should not be over sighted. They are expected to register and pass the minimum bench mark of 135 credits in case of students who started in 100 level and a minimum of 111 in case of the Direct Entry students. A student shall not register more than 50 credit load in a semester.
GRADING SYSTEM (G.P.A)
This is the average performance of the candidate for a semester expressed in grade points earned in the course taken by the candidate. Grade point average is derived by multiplying the Grade Point (G.P) obtained in each course by the credit units assigned that course and then dividing the sum by the total credits taken for the semester. Each course shall be graded on the basis of 100% total marks with proportions for Continuous Assessment (CA), Attendance and Examination. Continuous Assessment and (CA) and Attendance account for 30% while Examination attracts 70%. The reverse is the case for practical or production courses.
CUMULATIVE GRADE POINT AVERAGE (C.G.P.A)
This is up-to-date average mean score of the Grade Point (G.P) earned by a student at any point in a programme of study. i.e. the student’s overall performance at the given time. It is derived by:
i. Multiplying the Grade Points by the respective credit units;
ii. Then, dividing the sum by the total number of credit units for all the courses registered by the student.
