I,Professor Bertram Agodichukwu Okolo, the current head of Department of Linguistics Studies (formerly the Department of Linguistics and African Languages), on behalf of the staff and students, welcome you to the Department which is one of the several departments in the Faculty of Arts, University of Benin. Although the Department has changed its name (with effect from 2015/2016) from the Department of Linguistics and African Languages to the Department of Linguistics Studies, it still houses two Combined Honours units: Linguistics/Edo unit and Linguistics/Igbo unit. In addition, it has introduced two other units that could be studied from 2015/2016 Session. They are Diploma in Forensic Science and B.A. Degree in Forensic Linguistics. Students can specialize in any of these areas.
The Department boasts of highly qualified academics of the old mold who are personable and accessible, and are highly committed in teaching, research and in the welfare of students. They are ever willing to guide and counsel you in dealing with the many changes you will face while in the university. In essence, the Department attempts to provide students with a variety of learning experiences that hone a variety of basic academic skills that can be used in a variety of situations. We will attempt to enhance your analytic and creative thinking capacities, to bolster your problem-solving skills, and expand your understanding and appreciation of the country’s and world’s varied languages, cultures and peoples.
The Faculty of Arts in which our department is housed boasts of, not only having an enviable concentration of seasoned academics, but of having the largest number of students. All the disciplines in the faculty are accredited and our degrees rate high in terms of global acceptability either in employment or in institutions of higher learning. Judging by the accomplishments of the past students, we expect you all to be tomorrow’s leaders and that we will be singing your praises sometime in the future. I welcome you on board.
